The Rise of Over Rationality, What BooBoo’s have taught me

My Fiancé loves these dam things called boo-boo’s which for the unknowing men they are a stuffed animal/ hard plastic toy with a menacing grin on them. Literally something that in the 90’s would be considered a recipe of a horror film now has a grasp on millions of people. Fashioned by a company called pop something (you can google it if you wish) regardless their rise has cemented something in my mind that I never imagined would take hold.

This simply put that answers to problems are not always rational furthermore sometimes they are so far away from rationality that it begs the question how could they ever be solved? Think about these boo boo as they are put. On a purely rational basis they look like tiny figurines that have a face and smile akin to a clinically insane person lighting your house on fire yet still we have seen them have a historic rise?

This as I have learnt is due to the fact that our problems cannot be solved with logic nor should a lot of them be. Though our world has transformed into a logic forward world where the rise of engineering has taken hold from com science to economics and big data is is ofter toughed that the solution to a lot of our problems isn’t logical but rather a emotional solution. Why these dam dolls cause people to enjoy themselves so much that they want to spend so much money on something a rational person might deem useless consumerism?

Frankly who the fuck knows? However I know one thing for certain their bank accounts and evaluation has been rising steadily and those are things these Logicistas could get behind. Big data wants you to believe that another spreadsheet or graph or if you just had more data you could solve this pressing issue that is hurting your life or your companies wellbeing.

Well simply put this couldn’t be further from the truth the reality is data is always built of past preferences and choices and though “iItelligenistas” as Nassim Taleb would coin. Believe everything can be solved this way you cannot predict the future. A fundamental human trait first pretending to predict the future and being overly scientific will solve something. Most of our issues were solved with trail and error less from reasoning.

No doubt that sometimes has a part to play but with the invention of a bicycle or the wright brothers and flight. This tinkering has brought to light most of your inventions you love yet our education system teaches that failure is bad. As an aspiring Programmer with a current beginner to intermediate ability. Something I had to adopt rapidly is 1 failing fast and failing quickly to not only learn but get you closer to the goal.

Almost reverse engineering a problem via Negativa (via the negative) ie this is what it isn’t therefore this is what it is. Secondly sometimes things work and you have no idea why they do how in the hell could this thing be working but lo and behold it does. Don’t get me wrong I have a love for logic and use it frequently but just like anything rational and logic has limits and knowing that is vital. For these who still don’t believe me go ask your partner next you are having a bit of a spat why? See how that gets you the logical solution to this argument may not be their forte / they may have a different version of logic. Or for the solo ones why do you like a certain pizza topping I think you will realize there is not cut a dry reason it just is.

For problems like these corporate structure, your bosses behaviour, why your dog peed in the house or why you just got home and your misses is yelling at you. Recognizing that the solution is probably not logical but rather abstract and requires a different solution depending on the problem. I hope reduces the yelling in your life where you can tune in to a state of peace and tranquility faster.

With all the love and care,
-Kingsley
